What a website learns from your IP

From the address a website gets your country and approximate city, your ISP and the network type. A shop needs nothing more to show prices in the right currency. Anti-fraud systems compare the IP with what the browser reports: time zone, language and account login history.

If you work through a proxy, this page should show the proxy address, not yours. To check several proxies at once, with country, ISP and anonymity, use the proxy checker.

FAQ

What is an IP address?+

It is the address of your internet connection. Every website you open sees it and uses it to tell your country, approximate city and ISP.

Why is the city not accurate?+

Geolocation databases know which city an address block is registered to, not where your router stands. The country is usually right, but the city may be a neighbouring one, especially on mobile internet.

It shows the proxy IP, not mine. Is that fine?+

Yes. If your browser works through a proxy or VPN, websites see its address, which is the point. For the full picture, also check for DNS and WebRTC leaks.

How do I change my IP address?+

Restart your router (many ISPs assign a new address after that), switch to mobile internet or connect through a proxy. A rotating proxy changes the IP on every new connection.

What does network type mean?+

It is a rough guess based on the network owner name: mobile carrier, hosting or a regular ISP. Websites check hosting addresses the most strictly.
